Yes, the same Karan Johar who now commands the Bollywood stage once appeared on it as an actor. He made a small cameo in the cult classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, where he’s seen chatting with Shah Rukh Khan. Interestingly, he also worked as an assistant director on the same film under Aditya Chopra’s direction. Karan continued to make brief appearances in films like Om Shanti Om (2007), Fashion (2008), and Luck by Chance (2009), before fully stepping into his calling—filmmaking.

While working on DDLJ, Karan was simultaneously absorbing the nuances of filmmaking under the mentorship of his father, the legendary producer Yash Johar. In 1998, the father-son duo created cinematic history with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The film became the first blockbuster under Dharma Productions and marked Karan Johar’s debut as a director.

From the very beginning, Karan proved he wasn’t just “Yash Johar’s son”—he was a born filmmaker. With stories that touched hearts and visuals that dazzled audiences, he went on to direct hits like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, My Name is Khan, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and most recently, Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani.

Alongside direction, Karan soon began to flourish as a producer. Through Dharma Productions, he gave us unforgettable films such as Kal Ho Naa Ho, Kaal, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Dostana, Kurbaan, and Shershaah. Most recently, Kesari Chapter 2 starring Akshay Kumar and the pan-India release Akaal have further strengthened Dharma’s reputation in the industry.
